The Tommy’s Margarita is a simple margarita recipe which replaces the classic orange flavour from triple sec with Agave syrup as the sweetener. This simple three ingredient drink is delicious and about as authentic as they come.

Tommy’s Margarita Cocktail History

This 1990s drink was created at Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant in San Francisco by Julio Bermejo and has now become a staple of cocktail menus all over the world. This family owned restaurant has now become one of the bartender tourist destinations of the world, just like El Floridita, The American Bar at The Savoy and many others.

Tommy’s Margarita Cocktail Recipe

  • 2oz (60ml) 100% Agave Tequila
  • 1oz (30ml) Fresh Lime Juice
  • 1/2oz (15ml) Agave Syrup

Method

Shake the ingredients with ice and double strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass, or over ice in an old fashioned glass. Note that the Tommy’s Margarita is generally served without a salt rim.

Why Agave?

Tequila is made from the Blue Agave, so using agave syrup to sweeten the Tommy’s Margarita adds to that flavour and gives a more authentic mexican feel to the drink. However, if you’re thinking of using Agave as a healthy alternative to normal sugar syrup, you might want to look again… Here’s a great article from Authority Nutrition on Agave sweetening.
