The Zombie is a classic Tiki style drink, originally invented as a hangover cure to get a businessman through his day’s meeting. He reportedly came back to the bar a week later saying that the drink had turned him into a Zombie for the whole week!
I should point out that there are multiple recipes for the Zombie, so don’t worry if this doesn’t sound like the recipe you already know – The essence of the zombie is multiple rums with pineapple and… some other stuff! I’d love to hear your versions!
So what is the Zombie Cocktail?
The Zombie is a heady mix of any rum you can lay your hands on along with Apricot Brandy (though in our video we’ll use the more common Peach Schnapps like Archers), Orgeat syrup (Almond flavoured, we’re switching in amaretto which has a strong almond flavour) and pineapple juice.
Using better ingredients will always produce a better drink and that includes for the Zombie Cocktail, and we’re using some great rums. Brugal White Rum and Brugal Anejo create our base, and then we’re topping the drink off with a float of Gold of Mauritius. If you use overproof rum it is possible to set the floated liquor alight, although:
a) Be REALLY careful if you do, its at your own risk, and
b) You’re just burning off the alcohol. It looks pretty, but is that what you want?
If you find the Zombie too sweet, you can add a little lime juice to taste. Balance is important in a cocktail, and everyone’s tastes are different.
Zombie Cocktail Ingredients
- ½oz Gold Rum
- ½oz White Rum
- ¼oz Apricot Liqueur
- ¼oz Orgeat (or Amaretto)
- 1 ½oz Pineapple Juice
- Float ½oz Dark (or Overproof) Rum
Top Tips for Making Great Cocktails:
- Ice – Don’t skimp! Use plenty and use different ice to shake and to pour
- Shake hard and long – 12 seconds is optimal
- Garnish: Pineapple wedge is perfect
- Measuring – Use a bottle cap if you don’t have a measure to hand
- Presentation – Never bend the straws – it looks like the mid nineties.
Enjoy your Zombies!
