Jonnie Walker Blue Label Whisky will be the first spirit bottle to wear a Smart Label, an NFC enabled thin chip which can tell when the bottle has been opened and interact with consumer’s smart phones.

Billed as Diageo’s first steps into the Internet of Everything, the bottle’s OpenSense™ technology allows Diageo to track the time from production to consumption and will be useful in countering counterfeiting (Say that 10 times fast).

Unlike conventional static QR codes that are often difficult to read, easy to copy, and do not support sensor integration, OpenSense™  tags can dynamically detect if a bottle is sealed or open with the simple tap of an NFC smartphone. To ensure authenticity, the tags are also completely and permanently encoded at the point of manufacture and cannot be copied or electrically modified.

The labels are created by ThinFilm, a leader in the development of Printed Electronics.
