The Dirty Mother is a derivative of the Black and White Russian drinks, but there are a couple of recipes that I’ve found which conflict. The Dirty Mother is just one of the cocktails screamed at Brian Flannigan during his first shift in the 1988 Cocktail movie. The internet says its a Brandy Black Russian, but he’s working in a Fridays, and they say its a tall White Russian… Controversy!

The Internet’s Dirty Mother Cocktail Recipe

  • 1½oz (45ml) Brandy
  • 1½oz (45ml) Kahlua

Nice and simple. Just build over ice in a rocks glass and away you go.

However, because the drink is ordered in a Friday’s, you’d expect to be served the TGI Friday’s spec – which is as follows

TGI Friday’s Dirty Mother Cocktail Recipe

  • 1¼oz Vodka
  • ¾oz Kahlua
  • 3oz Half & Half

Shake with ice and strain on the rocks in a Collins glass.

So which version is right? This is one of the problems that we have as an industry at the moment as there is no universally recognised body to decide what cocktails should be. That being said, its also one of the things that makes the industry interesting as everyone can give their own twist on drinks. The only reason this is a problem is going into a couple of different bars to order something like the Dirty Mother and getting completely different drinks each time. The only thing they have in common is the Kaluha!
