The Cape Codder (or simply Cape Cod) is an easy mix of Vodka & Cranberry juice, and is named for the Cape Cod area of Massachusetts where cranberries are grown. In Cocktail, Tom Cruse’s Brian Brown makes the drink in the Cell Block bar during the movie’s second act. You can find a full list of every drink made or mentioned in Cocktail here.
Like a number of other drinks including the Greyhound, Screwdriver and others, the Cape Codder is essentially just assigning a cocktail name to a simple spirit and mixer combination. However, these types of named drinks describe not just the ingredients but also the standard garnish and in many cases the glassware that should be used too. Also, because the drink is so very simple, it can be quite embarrassing if a guest orders it and you don’t know what they’re asking for. It’s well worth spending a little time checking out these types of drinks if only to avoid looking dumb.
Cape Codder Recipe
- 1¼oz (37.5ml) Vodka
- 3oz (90ml) Cranberry Juice
Build the items over cubed ice in a Collins glass. Garnish with a squeeze of lime.
Try to make sure you use a high quality cranberry juice when working behind the bar. Avoid any that are labelled as “Cranberry Juice Drink” as this means they’re often over sweetened and have other added ingredients too.
